"Here's the other news. It's been in the works for a while, but we often have a delay before we can announce things. Vampire Academy has been optioned for film by Preger Entertainment! Yay! Let me make it clear, though: an option is exactly that. An option. It's a right to the books I sell, and it means Preger now has the option of turning VA into a film. It may not happen anytime soon. Some books are optioned for years with no action. So that may mean nothing is happening right now. Of course, it can also mean they're already scripting and making plans. The point I want to make is that you shouldn't brace yourself for a VA film coming out next spring. I probably sound pessimistic with these disclaimers, but I just want to be realistic because lots of books get optioned and have long delays before anything happens. Georgina was optioned over a year ago by Fox Television, and there's been no movement there either.

And what will happen with VA? That's as much a mystery to me as you. When an author sells those options, pretty much all control goes over to the production company. It's standard, and a lot of stories you hear about authors having a huge role in making a movie are simply that: stories. That's why movies don't always match books, but I have confidence in whatever Preger does. They're good folks. But, with it all in their hands now, I'll be waiting and hoping as anxiously as you. I have no clue when/if production will begin or how it will unfold. Like I said: it can be months, it can be years. Also, this means I don't have any control over casting. I have to mention that because I get requests almost daily. Smile Sorry! So cross your fingers on what'll happen to VA, but remember to be cautious and patient. The press release is here. "

Rm posted this on her facebook page in her notes. There is a ton more about release dates for books and stuff. But that's all the news about VA being optioned. I figured I'll post it for that didnt see/ don't follow RM on facebook or her blog.. Ahhh i don't know to feel!

Although the movie is never as good as the book and it's very likely that it'll be different or I won't like the casting, but I'm still very happy about the possibility of seeing it on screen.

As awesome as it is for Richelle and I'm super happy for her, I'm not happy about a VA movie at all. I have super high expectations for it and I srsly doubt anyone can do the movie to my liking. I love Twilight and the movies, btu I came in after I saw the first movie. I can definitely understand how fans don't like the movies and all the craze that has come along with it. I don't want a VA movie to ruin VA for me and I fear that its possible. Don't get me wrong I will always love VA but the thought of all those screaming crying tweens makes me feel a little sick. I dread it. I truely do but I support Richelle and will at least give it a shot. Hopefully I'm proved completely wrong.

Yeah, I agree. I hope it doesn't become like Twilight - a bunch of squealing girl who haven't even read the books drooling over the actors Rolling Eyes

Preger started a fan page of facebook where fans can make suggestions.
Its already filled with casting recommendations. Some of them are off. Sophia Bush is 27 hardly ideal for Rose anymore.

I wouldn't like Sophia Bush for Rose. I actually didn't find anyone who I would like to see play Rose. It's not only the looks that matter, it has to be someone who will be able to pull out her character completely, her personality.

An interview from http://www.penguin.com.au/vampireacademy/ with Michael Preger
Quote:
With news that Vampire Academy had officially been optioned for film development, we had to know more. So we headed straight to the top, Michael Preger of Preger Entertainment whose company acquired the film rights, kindly took the time to answer our exclusive questions.

Q. What attracted you to the Vampire Academy series?

I first read about a signing Richelle was doing in my home town of Miami and read a short synopsis of the book series. The story kept coming back to me over the next few days. I decided to do a little research, turned on the computer, and was really impressed. Not only with the reviews, but the fan-based passion and support everywhere for the series. So, off to the bookstore -- and a lot of reading!

Q. What characters are you excited about bringing to the big screen?

Well, this is Rose's story. But the powerful presence of Dimitri is also as compelling. Honestly, I found all the characters interesting, even the minor ones. Richelle's ability to keep characters interesting I think is one of her powerful gifts as a writer. I think that's why the next series has real potential. You really want to know more about these people.

Then, there's the strigoi.....a real monster!

Q. What are your thoughts on the fanbase?

What can I say. It was the fan base that made all this happen in my opinion. That's why we want to stay in touch with that force. Not just on opening weekend, but through the whole process of making this movie. This is their movie after all.

Q. Are you worried about comparisons to other vampire series such as Twilight, True Blood and Vampire Diaries?

No, I think we recognize this as a challenge in selling and marketing this project -- but I know the story is in another area code. I can't even begin to compare those worlds to this one. Asides from thematically both being based on Vampires, the similarities pretty much end there.

Q. Any messages to the VA fan community?

Yes. Keep on keeping on.....it's your passion, your energy and your loyalty that will make this what it can be. We respect you, we're listening to you, and we want to hear your voice!

ok that interview has me a little more excited. Hopefully they will listen to the fans as much as possible.

So far people are mainly suggesting Ben Barnes as Dimitri. Which I soooooo disagree with. I don't have a problem with older people playing the parts as long as they look young enough btu everyone they are suggesting don't look young enough. They should at least stick with people between the ages of 16-22 for the teenagers and in the 20's for Dimitri. I hope they take their time on this movie and make it the best it can be.

I still dread VA ending up as a screaming crying tween series like Twilight.

Aw, i think that's kinda of sweet of Micheal. At first i was kinda of eh, thinking he's just jumping in on the vampire bandwagon to cash in and esp since there is six books ( six movies) and then a spin off series( more movies)- it could end up being a really good pay day. But reading that short interview i respect the acknowledgement to the fans. I hope it's not just a "for-show"type thing.
